Male Breast Reduction

What is Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes enlarged breasts in men and boys. Two in three men experience it, and it can occur at any age. While gynecomastia is not usually serious, it is sometimes associated with diseases including cancer and thyroid issues. Men who have gynecomastia should see a physician to rule out a condition that needs to be treated.

From a cosmetic perspective, men and boys can have this excess breast tissue removed in a male breast reduction plastic surgery procedure. This restores a masculine chest and resolves the embarrassment that gynecomastia causes.

In children and younger adults, gynecomastia is usually the result of hormonal changes. In those cases, much of the tissue that is removed is glandular. In older men, gynecomastia is less likely to be hormonal in nature. The tissue removed in those cases is primarily fat and lax skin.

Some men have liposuction at the same time as their male breast reduction in order to reduce the love handles, flanks, and abdomen.

During your consultation, Dr. Combs will spend time with you to answer your questions and make sure he fully understands what you want to achieve. He will examine you and take a full medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for male breast reduction. It is important to him to operate with the utmost integrity and transparency so that you know what you can reasonably expect from your surgery.

What to Expect from a Male Breast Reduction

In some cases, male breast reduction can be done using local anesthesia and sedation. If the tissue to be removed is glandular, we will use general anesthesia. In either case, you should be able to go home a few hours after your surgery.

An incision is usually made under the areola (the dark skin around the nipples), so the scar is well hidden by the darker skin. If there is lax skin that needs to be removed, however, a larger incision must be made.

For removal of any fatty tissue, liposuction is done. In rare cases, the areolas and nipples must be repositioned to a higher position on the chest in order to provide you with the most pleasing result.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery and Aftercare

You will wear a compression bandage, and we will ask you to avoid sleeping on your stomach for several nights. Non-dissolvable sutures are usually removed within a week or two.

Pain, swelling, and bruising are inevitable for several weeks. You will be able to see a flatter chest immediately, but the swelling will prevent you from seeing the final results right away.

You should be able to return to work and other activities within a week of surgery. Sports and exercise can be resumed in about four weeks.

Pain medication will be given, as well as antibiotics to prevent infection. Of course, if you have any questions as you heal, do not hesitate to call us. We will see you for follow-up examinations to monitor your progress.
