What is a Face Lift?
A face lift, also called rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that addresses facial wrinkles and sagging of the middle to lower portions of the face. It can correct jowls, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and sagging in the cheek area, tightening the face for a more youthful look.
Dr. Combs has extensive experience with varied face lift techniques. During your consultation, he will spend time with you to answer your questions and make sure he fully understands what you want to achieve. He will examine you and take a full medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for a face lift. It is important to him to operate with the utmost integrity and transparency so that you know what you can reasonably expect from your surgery.
A face lift is often done in conjunction with a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid lift to also correct aging of the neck, sagging eyebrows, or sagging eyelids. Some patients have cheek or chin implants at the same time as a face lift.
What to Expect from a Face Lift
For those who only need tightening in the midface, a minimally invasive face lift can be performed. If you have sagging of the jowls or wrinkles around the mouth, a full face lift is usually recommended. Besides removing excess skin, Dr. Combs will also tighten the muscles of the face. This allows the results of the face lift to last ten years or longer.
Incisions will depend on your particular case, but they can usually be hidden, such as within the hairline or just in front of the ears. Sometimes, incisions can be made behind the ears. A face lift is usually performed using general anesthesia.
Face Lift Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients miss a week or two of work after a face lift. Exercise and sports activities can be resumed after about a month. You will be restricted from driving and wearing makeup for about a week.
Pain, swelling, tightness, and bruising, are inevitable for at least two weeks, and swelling will be the last of these symptoms to resolve. You can reduce swelling by sleeping with your head elevated for a couple of weeks. We will give you pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection.
Drains may be necessary within the incisions for a few days to catch post-surgical fluids. You will be bandaged, and we may apply a compression wrap for a short time. We will give you complete instructions for washing, showering, and caring for your incisions.
The final results of your procedure will show when all swelling has subsided. Of course, if you have any questions as you heal, do not hesitate to call us. We will see you for follow-up examinations to monitor your healing.
