What is Hand Rejuvenation?
Hand rejuvenation, or hand enhancement, is a non-surgical procedure to restore a youthful look to your hands. Often, our hands show our age even before our face. They lose volume and become wrinkled, and the veins and tendons become prominent.
Hand rejuvenation is achieved through dermal filler injections or fat grafting. Sculptra®, or fat that has been harvested from your own body can be used to add volume to your hands and “plump” up the aging areas. They can make your hands much younger-looking, and with fat transfer, results may be permanent.
Sculptra® is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a substance that is already present in the body.
We have performed many hand rejuvenation procedures. During your consultation, we will spend time with you to answer your questions and make sure we fully understand what you want to achieve. We will examine you and take a full medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for hand rejuvenation, and we will make recommendations as to which method will work best for you.
What to Expect from Hand Rejuvenation
Fat grafting is the longest lasting of the hand rejuvenation injectables, but it also involves liposuction on another part of the body to harvest the fat. Small incisions are made on the thighs, abdomen, or buttocks to remove excess fat. A cannula (tube) is inserted in the incisions, and it is attached to a suction device so that the fat can be extracted. Local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia are used for liposuction.
The fat is then carefully treated and purified before it is injected into your hands. Some patients decide to have fat grafting on the face and neck at the same time as hand rejuvenation.
Sculptra® injections usually last six months to a year. A tiny needle is used, and the formulas include Lidocaine to numb the injection sites. We can also apply a topical anesthetic before the procedure, and the injections take only a few minutes.
Whether you choose a dermal filler or fat grafting, you can go home the same day.
Hand Rejuvenation Recovery and Aftercare
If you have fat grafting, you will miss up to a week of work. Exercise and sports activities can be resumed after four to six weeks. Pain, swelling, tightness, and bruising are inevitable for a couple of weeks in the areas where the fat was extracted, and swelling will be the last of these symptoms to resolve. We will give you pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection.
We will give you complete instructions for washing, showering, and caring for your incisions.
At the injection sites, you may also experience some pain, swelling, and bruising, but the symptoms in those areas will be less severe and should resolve quickly.
If you have Sculptra® injections, there is no downtime required. While you may have some pain, swelling, and bruising, it should be minor and only last a few days.
Of course, if you have any questions as you heal, do not hesitate to call us. We will see you for follow-up examinations to monitor your healing.
