What is Post-bariatric surgery?
Post-bariatric surgery often leaves folds of skin on the body that are not just unsightly, but also often cause discomfort and skin rashes. A body lift is performed after post-bariatric surgery to remove excess fat and loose skin from the lower part of the body, including the waist, abdomen, hips, and buttocks. It is often performed along with a thigh lift to extend the procedure to the upper legs, as well as an arm lift to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms. These surgeries contour these areas of the body so that they are tighter and smoother.
Dr. Combs has extensive experience with these procedures, having worked with a number of post-bariatric patients. During your consultation, he will spend time with you to answer your questions and make sure he fully understands what you want to achieve. He will examine you and take a full medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for a body lift, thigh lift, and/or arm lift.
What to Expect from a Body, Thigh, and Arm Lift
These procedures are performed using general anesthesia. The incisions must extend the same length as the excess skin that needs to be removed. Dr. Combs will do his best to keep scarring to a minimum, but there will be visible scars after these surgeries.
For a lower body lift, the incision is often circumferential, all the way around the lower abdomen and back, sometimes extending on the buttocks if there is loose skin to be removed there. The incisions for the thigh lift will be kept to the inner thighs, if possible. Incisions for arm lifts are along the back of the upper arms.
Liposuction is used, as necessary, to remove excess fat, and after the loose skin is removed, the skin is redraped for a tighter, smoother appearance. The length of time needed for the surgery varies.
Body, Thigh, and Arm Lift Recovery and Aftercare
If you have a body lift with or without a thigh or arm lift, you will need to take at least four weeks off from work. Exercise and sports activities can be resumed after about six to weight weeks. Your recovery will be easier if you have some help at home.
Pain, swelling, tightness, and bruising are inevitable for a few weeks in the surgical areas, and swelling will be the last of these symptoms to resolve. We will give you pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection. You should be able to go home the same day, but in some cases, we may suggest that you spend a night in the hospital.
Drains will be placed within some of the incisions for a few days to catch post-surgical fluids. We will give you complete instructions for washing, showering, and caring for your incisions. You will also be given compression garments to wear for a period of time.
Of course, if you have any questions as you heal, do not hesitate to call us. We will see you for follow-up examinations to monitor your healing.
The final result, when all swelling has resolved, will be smoother, slimmer, more toned lower body, thighs, and arms.
